Our alphabets are the everyday visual symbols of our speech, and to reconnect our bodies to the written word through the use of hand lettering (as opposed to the computer keyboard) can be a powerful form of communication as well as a therapeutic process. Calligraphy is an art form or practise that is open to us all and which can be a meditative and contemplative experience.

I took up calligraphy in 1996 and went on to study on the 3 year advanced training scheme of the Society of Scribes and Illuminators. As well as carrying out traditional calligraphic work, I like to take an experimental approach, combining this with digital imaging, and occasionally animation and paper sculpture .
To be able to call on this traditional knowledge as a designer is a great advantage and keeps me in touch with manual as well as digital skills.

I am happy to consider all requests for calligraphic work - from invitations to full panel art pieces, certificates, logos etc.

If you are interested in having a go at some calligraphy, I have prepared  two worksheets on Foundational hand and four worksheets on Italic which you can download here by clicking the files on the right. These are intended solely for personal use.
